The passing of George H.W. Bush on Friday marks the end of a political era. The last president to have served in World War II, the Bush presidency was considered to be the last before an era of acrid political culture. As tributes pour in from around the globe, however, many are remembering Bush not for his time in the Oval Office or his career in politics, but for his famed appearance on The Simpsons.
Bush appeared in an episode entitled Two Bad Neighbors which originally aired in 1996 on the long running Simpsons television series. The story revolves around Homer’s worsening relationship with the former Commander in Chief as the Bush family moves into a house across the street in their Springfield neighborhood. The troubles begin when Homer’s son Bart accidentally shreds the former president’s memoirs, and only escalate from there as homer and Bush engage in suburban warfare, deploying tactics that ranged from bottle rockets to locusts. Bush eventually concedes and clears out of the neighborhood, at which point former president Gerald Ford moves in, whom Homer immediately takes a liking to.

The idea for the episode came after a feud between the Bush family and The Simpsons series, which began when Barbara Bush was quoted in People magazine called The Simpsons “the dumbest thing [she] had ever seen.” The feud only worsened during Bush’s 1992 re-election campaign when he had bad-mouthed the series in a campaign speech.
